What Is a Gynecologist?
A Gynecologist is a medical doctor who specializes in the health of the female reproductive system. They diagnose, treat, and help prevent conditions related to the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and vagina. Gynecologists also provide care for menstrual disorders, contraception, fertility issues, perimenopause and menopause, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
It is recommended that women visit a gynecologist for routine, annual checkups. An annual Gynelogical exam is an important part of each stage of your health. During the early years, young women should begin annual visits with a gynecologist around age 15. These early appointments are typically focused on open discussions about overall health, birth control, and preventing sexually transmitted infections, rather than physical exams. In most cases, a pelvic exam isn’t needed. Establishing a trusted relationship with a gynecologist is an important step in taking charge of your health.
In a woman’s reproductive years, this visit includes a pelvic and breast exam to check for any abnormalities, such as lumps, painful areas, or uterine fibroids. The patient may discuss any concerns she has, including common but bothersome conditions like UTIs, bacterial vaginosis, and yeast infections. If you’re considering family planning, the visit may explore birth control options, fertility considerations, and preconception counseling - tailoring to your lifestyle, goals, and stage of life.
Throughout the perimenopause and menopause years, a gynecologist would discuss and may treat symptoms. Menopause typically occurs between ages 50 and 52. During this transition, many women experience irregular or heavy periods as hormone levels fluctuate. These changes can lead to common menopause symptoms, including night sweats, mood swings, and hot flashes.
Initial Consultation
We recommend booking an initial consultation, in which the gynecologist will assess your medical history, discuss any concerns, and perform necessary exams. Many first visits do not require a pelvic exam, especially if you are under 21 and not experiencing any symptoms. It’s mostly a conversation to establish care.
Follow Up Visit
After an initial consultation, we advise a follow up visit, which allows for reviewing previous concerns or test results, additional examinations (if needed), monitoring progress, and adjusting the treatment plan if needed. It may also entail preventative care and lifestyle advice around menstrual health, fertility and pregnancy planning, and menopause management.
