What Is an IUD and How Does It Work?

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a widely used form of birth control because it is safe, highly effective, and low-maintenance.

To get an IUD, your doctor will conduct an examination to determine the best size and type for your body. You'll also have a thorough discussion about the available options. Together, you and your doctor will select the IUD that best fits your needs and lifestyle.

An IUD is a small, T-shaped plastic device placed inside your uterus to prevent pregnancy. There are two main types:

  • Copper (Non-Hormonal) IUD – This type physically blocks sperm from reaching an egg. The copper acts as a natural sperm deterrent. ParaGard is the leading brand of non-hormonal IUDs.

  • Hormonal IUD – This type releases hormones that prevent pregnancy. The FDA has approved four brands: Mirena, Kyleena, Liletta, and Skyla.

When choosing between a copper and hormonal IUD, consider whether you prefer to keep your menstrual cycle or are comfortable with a lighter or absent period.

Here’s how the different hormonal IUDs compare:

  • Mirena: Releases the highest level of hormones, which may stop your periods entirely.

  • Kyleena: Contains slightly less hormone than Mirena but lasts just as long. It helps maintain a more regular menstrual cycle.

  • Liletta: Similar to Mirena in hormone levels and effectiveness, but designed for up to four years of use.

  • Skyla: The smallest IUD with the lowest hormone dose. It is more likely to preserve your menstrual cycle and needs replacement every three to four years.

Our specialists will guide you through the decision-making process, ensuring you find the best option for your body and lifestyle.

What Is the IUD Insertion Process?

At Well by Messer, your comfort and well-being are our top priorities. We understand that the idea of IUD insertion can feel overwhelming, which is why many doctors now offer anesthesia and a variety of pain management options to make the experience as comfortable as possible.

Pain Management Options We Offer:

  • Local anesthesia to numb the area.

  • Oral medications to help reduce anxiety and discomfort.

We believe that prioritizing your reproductive health should never mean sacrificing your comfort. Our goal is to make every procedureβ€”including IUD insertionβ€”as smooth and pain-free as possible, tailored to your unique needs.

What to Expect

Women may feel dizzy or lightheaded when standing up after the procedure. To help prevent this, we recommend having a light meal and staying well-hydrated before your appointment. Also, some women experience mild cramping after both insertion and removal. To help manage this discomfort, your doctor may suggest taking an over-the-counter pain reliever before your appointment.

IUD Removal

When it’s time to remove or replace your IUD, our gynecologist will safely perform the procedure in our office, ensuring a quick and comfortable experience.

What Are the Benefits and Risks of IUD?

Benefits

  • IUDs are one of the most effective forms of birth control, up to 99% effective.

  • They are safe to use, with minimal side effects.

  • Insertion is a quick procedure performed in your gynecologist’s office.

  • The device can be easily removed when needed.

  • It does not affect long-term fertility.

  • You can have an IUD inserted at any point in your menstrual cycle.

  • It can prevent certain cancers such as cervical, endometrial, and ovarian cancer.

Risks

The risks associated with IUD insertion are minimal, especially when performed by one of our expert gynecologists.

  • The most significant potential risk occurs during placement, where the IUD could accidentally perforate the uterine or vaginal wall.

  • Infection is another possible risk during insertion. If left untreated, an infection could affect fertility, so it’s essential to seek prompt treatment if needed.

After your IUD insertion, be sure to contact your doctor if you experience heavy bleeding or cramping that isn’t relieved by over-the-counter pain medication. If you have any concerns about the position of your IUD, don’t hesitate to reach our specialists.
