What Is Vulvovaginitis?

Vulvovaginitis is an inflammation or infection of the vulva (external genital area) and vagina. It is a common condition that can affect women and girls of all ages, often causing discomfort, itching, redness, swelling, unusual vaginal discharge, and pain or discomfort during urination or intercourse.

What Are the Causes of Vulvovaginitis?

Vulvovaginitis can be caused by various factors. Yeast infections (candida) are the most common causes of vulvovaginitis in women, along with other bacterial infections, or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like trichomoniasis which is less common. Other causes could be due to certain chemicals—found in different types of soaps, body lotions, scented hygiene products, or detergents. Hormonal factors play a large role in causing Vulvovaginitis—a decrease in estrogen levels—especially common in menopausal women can make the vaginal tissue more prone to irritation. Poor hygiene or excessive cleaning can disrupt the natural balance of vaginal flora leading to infection and irritation. Allergic reactions such as sensitivity to latex condoms, spermicides, or other substances can also lead to Vulvovaginitis.

What Are the Treatments and Therapies for Vulvovaginitis?

The treatment for vulvovaginitis depends on the underlying cause. Thorough medical evaluations, including lab tests and physical exams will be prescribed to ensure that the correct diagnosis is made—whether the condition is due to bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, trichomoniasis, or another cause. If the diagnosis is bacterial vaginosis (BV) or Trichomoniasis (STI), an antibiotic medication would be prescribed—either an oral pill or cream that is inserted into the vagina. If vulvovaginitis is due to yeast infections (candida), antifungal medications would be given or vaginal antifungal creams and suppositories. Hormone therapy, in the form of estrogen creams or vaginal tablets may be recommended, if the underlying cause is due to hormonal imbalances  – most common in menopausal women.

Keeping the genital area clean and dry is important when you have vulvovaginitis—or especially as a preventative measure. Avoid using hygiene sprays, fragrances, or powders in the genital area. Practicing good hygiene—wiping from front to back, changing out of wet clothing quickly, and avoiding excessive washing of the genital area are all crucial for preventing vulvovaginitis. Also, wearing loose-fitting clothing, breathable cotton underwear and avoiding tight synthetic fabrics that trap moisture. Diet, such as eating yogurt or probiotic supplements, could also help restore healthy vaginal flora.
