What Made You Focus on ob/gyn?

Fate and luck have a funny way of working. As a young high school student looking for a job, I quite randomly was assigned to be a ward clerk in the labor and delivery unit of a nearby tertiary care hospital.  This super large and busy facility served the community. As they say, never a dull moment was had.  The frenetic pace was exciting and exhilarating.  I found myself drawn to the minute-to-minute adrenaline rushes of doctors managing childbirth and emergency room ambulance arrivals.  Moreover, I was absolutely enamored with the physicians who made this frenzied pace look easy with their breadths of knowledge, procedural competences and compassion for patients. I knew instantly that these ob/gyn physicians were the mentors whose career paths I was meant to follow.

What Is Your Approach to Medicine?

Listen!  Listen carefully. Patients will tell you their stories if you allow time and patience.  Approach each patient as a whole person and not just as the body parts associated with the specialty.

Broadly, Iโ€™m in the business of healing; but there is such a unique perspective to doing so as an obstetrician gynecologist.  We build long term and very special relationships with our patients as we are trusted for guidance with some of womenโ€™s most cherished, personal and precious moments and milestones.  We often see generations of families; we donโ€™t judge, we keep secrets, and we help our patients through the good and the difficult.

Do You Do Any Philanthropic Work?

I enjoyed my tenure as a board member at Hopeโ€™s Door, a shelter for domestic violence in my community.  Sadly, this is more common than most know, and it affects women of all backgrounds.  My eyes were opened to the fact that domestic violence is not just physical but also verbal and emotional, and this is often most difficult to uncover. I found this work valuable as a gynecologist, who I now appreciate is often the first person trusted in confidence, with this often deeply buried secret. This experience was truly humbling.
