Why Did You Become a Doctor
Growing up I was always fascinated with science, interacting with people, and problem solving. I was impacted with curiosity as to why family members would go to a hospital and return grateful and healthy. This insight gave me the drive to become the first physician in my family and the privilege to embark in a profession filled with rewarding relationships and pioneering scientific discovery.
What Made You Focus on Internal Medicine?
My internal medicine rotation allowed me to walk away with the realization that this specialty encompassed a variety of scientific, social, economic, and emergent challenges. I found each patientās story as a narrative waiting to be understood, and a gift to care for patients in their most vulnerable times. Primary care is a complex ever-changing field that subjects someone to more than just science. Through inspirational mentors, I saw first-hand what it is like to help people reach their potential and live their best lives. I have not looked back since.
What Is Your Approach to Medicine?
Medicine is about people. Listening, talking, counseling, consoling, supporting, teaching, and encouraging are fundamental approaches I practice with my patients. I am passionate about providing impactful and innovative care while always emphasizing oneās own autonomy.
I see my relationship with patients as a team. I believe in providing the most accurate evidence-based medical advice, but ultimately leave it up to the patient to make their own decision. Medicine is not one size fits all, every situation is different, and thus requires individual plans for all my patients.
Furthermore, I enjoy educating my patients during the visits through drawings, diagrams, journal articles and encourage them all to come back with challenging questions to develop a trusting partnership.
Most importantly, I do not hesitate to advocate for patients as they navigate our complex healthcare system.
How Would You Define Patient Care?
Patient care starts with listening and focusing on the individualās healthcare needs and creating a collaborative partnership. The doctor-patient relationship is built on transparent communication leading to personalized assessment, and treatment towards future health goals.
Do You Do Any Philanthropic Work?
I am in the process of collaborating with former colleagues to participate in medical mission trips to Africa every other year and support several local charities through my Church.
