What Is Hyperlipidemia?

Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition characterized by abnormally high levels of lipids (fats) in the blood, including cholesterol and triglycerides.

In hyperlipidemia, abnormalities in one or more of the following lipid levels are seen:

  • High total cholesterol

  • High low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol

  • High triglycerides

  • Low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol

  • High non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C)

What Are the Causes of Hyperlipidemia?

The most common causes of hyperlipidemia include:

  • Genetic factors (familial hypercholesterolemia)

  • Dietary causes (excessive intake of saturated and trans fats can elevate LDL whereas excessive intake of refined carbohydrates and simple sugars can raise triglycerides)

  • Underlying medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, obesity, hypothyroidism)

  • Certain medications (e.g., diuretics, corticosteroids)

Uncontrolled hyperlipidemia can increase the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, such as:

  • Coronary artery disease

  • Atherosclerosis (buildup of plaque in the arteries)

  • Heart attack and stroke

Hyperlipidemia is diagnosed through a blood test that measures the lipid profile.

What Are the Treatments and Therapies for Hypocalcemia?

Treatment options may include:

  • Lifestyle modifications (e.g., diet, exercise, weight management)

  • Lipid-lowering medications, such as statins, fibrates, or bile acid sequestrants

  • Treatment of underlying medical conditions contributing to hyperlipidemia

How Can Well by Messer Help You with Hyperlipidemia?

At Well By Messer, our high cholesterol levels specialists will not only determine if patients have hyperlipidemia but also will assess their overall risk of heart attack and stroke. Hyperlipidemia alone may not require medical therapy, however, if patients have other risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (including history of smoking, high blood pressure, family history of heart disease at a young age, etc), treatment may be necessary. We take a multidisciplinary approach to treat hyperlipidemia. Our physicians, dietician and trainer will work together with our patients to determine the best plan for improving their cholesterol.
