Get to Know Dr. Arthur Perry
Why Did You Become a Doctor?
I’m one of those people whose mother started him in school a year early because she knew I’d want to specialize. Seriously. I’ve knew I’d be a doctor in elementary school. By my first year of college, I began reading plastic surgery textbooks. And in medical school, I “hung out” in the operating room, waiting for interesting plastic surgery cases during my free time.
What Made You Focus on Plastic Surgery?
Plastic surgery is the only medical specialty that allows for, and in fact requires, creativity. We are artists who need to be able to envision the final result before entering the operating room. I love creating a plan to improve someone’s appearance. I have devoted my life to making people happy by performing procedures that make them look younger or better.
What Is Your Approach to Medicine?
I have a very “common sense” approach to plastic surgery. I’ve watched so many procedures come and go, claiming to be the “next big thing in plastic surgery”. Before adopting a new procedure, I need to be convinced that it is safe and effective. I perform cutting edge procedures, but I won’t perform excessively risky procedures for the sake of one’s appearance, and I won’t do things that will make you look funny, even if you ask me. For example, the popular “Brazilian Butt Lift” procedure is so dangerous that I will not perform it. I’ll send you to Well by Messer’s personal trainer to develop your glutes instead!
How Would You Define Patient Care?
At my residency at Harvard, surgeons were regarded as internal medicine doctors who operated. That’s a different attitude than most surgeons have – so many regard themselves as technicians. As a “thinking surgeon”, I embrace the total wellness concept that Well by Messer has championed, and I’m happy to be part of the team.
Do You Do Any Philanthropic Work?
For years, I performed charity reconstructive surgery on indigent patients through the Healing the Children program. I have also been involved with the American Cancer Society and in 2024, I was the medical honoree for the New Jersey American Cancer Society Gala, having been recognized for my surgery on cancer patients. I just patented a skin cream that can decrease the irritation that radiation therapy inflicts on skin.
Medical Talks & Presentations
I’ve given countless talks to community groups over the years, and have spoken at the 92nd Street Y and other venues. In my capacity at Columbia, I lecture to the plastic surgery trainees on topics such as wrinkle filler, lasers, peels, liposuction, and facelifting.
Media Appearances
For over two decades, I hosted the radio show “What’s Your Wrinkle?” on New York’s WOR and New Jersey’s WABC, about cosmetic surgery and skin care. I’ve been on the Dr. Oz show 11 times and have also been on Red Table Talk, Tamron Hall, Oprah, Good Morning America, and many other national television programs. I’ve authored several books, including Straight Talk About Cosmetic Surgery, published by Yale University Press, which won the award for the best health book. I also co-wrote You -Being Beautiful with Drs. Michael Roizen and Mehmet Oz.
