What Is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a condition in which the glandular tissue in the breasts becomes enlarged in boys or men. It is usually the result of a hormonal imbalance and typically occurs during infancy, adolescence, or mid to late life. When gynecomastia is the result of an underlying health problem, treatment of that problem usually improves the gynecomastia as well.
Gynecomastia is a condition where men develop enlarged breast tissue. It typically presents as a firm, round, and usually movable lump under the nipple area, and it can sometimes be tender. Although gynecomastia is usually bilateral, it is often asymmetrical and can even be unilateral. If you notice these symptoms, it's important to see a doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment. Gynecomastia should not be confused with pseudo gynecomastia (also known as lipomastia), which occurs in overweight men whose breasts enlarge because of fat deposits.
What Are the Causes of Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is caused by an imbalance between estrogen and testosterone levels. It can occur naturally at different life stages: in newborns due to maternal hormones, in about half of adolescent boys during puberty, and in older men due to hormonal changes. Medical conditions like liver or kidney disease, hormone-producing tumors, and thyroid problems can also cause gynecomastia. Additionally, certain medications and substances, including some heart and cancer drugs, anti-androgens, and recreational drugs like marijuana, can lead to this condition.
What Are the Treatments and Therapies for Gynecomastia?
The treatment for gynecomastia depends on the underlying cause. If it's medication-related, stopping it can help. Treating conditions like hyperthyroidism or testicular tumors often improves gynecomastia. If no specific cause is found and the symptoms aren't bothersome, watchful waiting with regular check-ups is usually recommended. Pain relief can be provided if needed. For persistent cases, medications like tamoxifen might be used, and surgery is an option if the gynecomastia is long-lasting or causes significant distress.
How Can Well by Messer Help You with Gynecomastia?
At Well By Messer, our gynecomastia doctors are committed to providing a thorough evaluation and treatment. We start with a detailed history and examination to distinguish between true gynecomastia and pseudogynecomastia. We may also conduct blood tests to check hormone levels, and if necessary, we use breast ultrasound or mammograms for an accurate diagnosis. Once diagnosed, we tailor the treatment to the cause, whether it involves stopping certain medications, addressing underlying conditions, or providing pain relief. For persistent cases, we offer medications like tamoxifen and can refer patients to experienced surgeons for further treatment if needed. Our goal is to ensure compassionate care for all our patients.
