Why Did You Become a Psychologist?

I began my career in advertising and marketing, a field that honed my skills in understanding consumer behavior and developing effective messaging. While rewarding, I found myself yearning for a deeper connection to the human experience. The work lacked the profound exploration of what truly drives people—their emotions, thoughts, and social influences beyond the marketplace. This realization sparked a shift in my focus.

I discovered a growing interest in the psychological factors that shape human behavior, inspiring me to pursue a master’s in counseling, followed by a doctorate in psychology. I was eager to delve into the complexities of the mind, exploring how individuals make decisions, navigate challenges, and find meaning in their lives. This transition allowed me to integrate my creative background with a more profound understanding of human behavior, enabling me to support personal growth and well-being in a way that transcended selling products. It was not just a career change but a personal transformation, one that aligned my work with my core values and desire to make a meaningful impact on others' lives.

What Made You Focus on Health Psychology?

Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the struggles of family members dealing with illness, and that had a profound impact on me. As I saw them navigate the physical and emotional challenges of their situation, I became increasingly curious about the psychological factors that influence health and well-being. I was drawn to the field of health psychology because it offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on people's lives by addressing the complex connection between mind and body. Health psychology empowers me to help individuals understand how their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors influence their physical health, and to guide them in making healthier decisions. I’m also drawn to the interdisciplinary nature of the field, where I can collaborate with other healthcare professionals to offer holistic care. I find the growing recognition of mental health in overall health care to be inspiring, and I’m passionate about advocating for better integration of psychological support in medical settings.

What Is Your Approach to Therapy?

I’m particularly drawn to the psychological approaches to insomnia, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which teaches individuals to take an active role in modifying and adopting new behaviors and cognitions surrounding sleep. The ability to help people improve their sleep, and by extension, their quality of life, is deeply motivating.  The evidence-based approach of CBT-I aligns with my passion for helping people understand how their thoughts, behaviors, and emotions impact their health. What excites me most is the opportunity to make a lasting difference by teaching people the skills they need to regain control over aspects of their sleep and eventually break the cycle of sleeplessness, leading to better overall well-being. Working in this niche allows me to combine my interest in mental health with a practical, health-focused, and life-changing intervention. It feels very rewarding to be part of a field that has such direct and transformative benefits for those who struggle with insomnia and sleep-related anxiety.

Do You Do Any Philanthropic Work?

I am excited to have recently joined the voluntary faculty at Lenox Hill Hospital, Northwell Health, within the Department of Psychiatry. I am eager to contribute to the professional growth and educational experience of the new residents while advancing the hospital's mission to provide great care to the community. I am also committed to enhancing the overall experience for patients, families, and staff at Lenox Hill as a member of the Hospital Auxiliary. As co-chair of the Pet Therapy Committee, I collaborate with fellow members of the Hospital Auxiliary to fund and support therapeutic interactions between patients and specially trained therapy dogs. A lifelong animal lover, I believe strongly in the healing power of both psychology and the human-animal bond, and I am passionate about holistic care. Additionally, I actively contribute to fostering language learning and cultural exchange through my work with ENGin, a nonprofit organization that helps Ukrainian individuals build a brighter future by learning conversational English.
