Why Did You Become a Doctor
As a child, I often made rounds with my dad or spent time in his office. I helped him computerize his records and had the utmost respect for his ability to treat his patients. Using science and technology to help others is a major reason I went into medicine. I spent a lot of time at Dartmouth with Dr. C. Everett Koop, former U.S. Surgeon general. As my mentor, he inspired me to focus on public health impact and how doctors can help shape public policy and the health of the nation.
What Made You Focus on Urology?
Urology combines treating simple urologic health issues with medicine and lifestyle changes and the ability to perform curative surgeries. I like the balance of nonsurgical and surgical solutions.
What Is Your Approach to Medicine?
I see my relationship with patients as a team effort. I believe in providing the most accurate evidence-based medical advice but respect the patientβs autonomy. Medicine is not one size fits all. Since every situation is different, it requires individual plans for all my patients. Most importantly, I do not hesitate to advocate for patients as they navigate our complex healthcare system.
How Would You Define Patient Care?
Patient care starts with listening and focusing on the individualβs healthcare needs and creating a collaborative partnership. The doctor-patient relationship is built on transparent communication leading to personalized assessment and treatment.
