What Are Adrenal Adenomas?

The adrenal gland is a paired organ located on the upper pole of each kidney. Adrenal adenomas are non-cancerous (benign) growths in the adrenal glands. Most adrenal adenomas are less than 4 cm in diameter. These growths can produce hormones on their own, causing conditions like Cushing's syndrome (too much cortisol) and Conn's syndrome (too much aldosterone). Rarely, they might cause male or female hormone changes.

In about 10% of cases, these adenomas cause Cushing's syndrome, which includes symptoms like weight gain, muscle weakness, and high blood pressure. Some adenomas cause Conn's syndrome, leading to high blood pressure and low potassium levels. There are also rare tumors that produce androgens or estrogens. In males, it can present as feminization with gynecomastia and decreased libido; in women, it can present with changes in menstrual cycles. It is important to assess patients with adrenal adenomas for these symptoms to manage potential health risks effectively.

What Are the Causes of Adrenal Adenomas?

Sometimes, adrenal adenomas are linked to genetic changes, or they are influenced by abnormal signals that make the glands release hormones without the usual triggers. Most of the time, these tumors appear randomly, but they can also be part of hereditary conditions. Understanding these genetic factors helps doctors diagnose and treat the tumors better.

What Are the Treatments and Therapies for Adrenal Adenomas?

Treatment of adrenal adenomas depends on the tumor type and activity. For non-functioning adenomas, regular monitoring with imaging and hormone tests is often sufficient. However, if the adenoma is producing excess hormones, surgical removal of the tumor, typically through minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, is the preferred treatment. For aldosterone-producing adenomas, medications may be used if surgery is not an option.

How Can Well by Messer Help You with Adrenal Adenomas?

A close follow-up with an endocrinologist is essential to managing any hormonal imbalances and ensuring a successful recovery. Our adrenal adenomas doctors can assist patients by employing comprehensive diagnostic measures. Initially, blood tests are used to assess hormone levels which can indicate if the adenoma is overproducing hormones. Imaging tests, such as CT scans or MRIs, are then utilized to visualize the adrenal gland and detect the presence and size of the adenoma. These diagnostic tools help us to provide you a tailored treatment plan. From initial consultation through treatment and post-surgery follow-up, you’ll receive friendly and focused care from each member of our team.
